6 WEEK CHALLENGE
The 6 Week Challenge Program designed as a beginners ‘crash course’ to BJJ and to give individuals an rough overview of BJJ as a whole.
As the name suggests the challenge is conducted over a 6 week time period where individuals partaking in the challenge will focus on 6 critical and fundament areas of BJJ. These areas include but are not limited to:
- Takedowns
- Mount – Controls and Submissions
- Side Controls – Controls and Submissions
- Escapes – Side Control & Mount
- Closed Guard
- Opening & Passing The Closed Guard
The primary goal is to ease people into BJJ similar to that of the White Belt Beginner Program as to lead to a higher retention rate in new, prospective members.

STEP 1.
Firstly, establish an appropriate start and finish date for you to start your Challenge. You should aim for a lead time of at least four weeks prior to the Challenge to enable thorough marketing.
STEP 2.
Decide where the Challenge classes will fit into your existing timetable and if necessary, decide what changes might need to be made if necessary.
STEP 3.
Once you have established your start date for the Challenge, begin to prepare your marketing materials. This will include digital flyers, infographics, photos from previous Challenges, etc. These will be used for Facebook Marketing in the lead up to the Challenge.
STEP 4.
Prepare a private facebook group that challengers can be added to. This group can be used to post updates, praise them on a good night of training, deals and sales, potential gym closures i.e holidays, seminars, etc
STEP 5.
Now that you have all your marketing materials ready, spend the next four weeks marketing the Challenge through sponsored facebook posts. Ensure that the posts are marketed to the predominant demographic within your area.
STEP 6.
The day before the Challenge or morning of, establish a final list of the challengers. It is a good idea to consider a total cap on the challenger numbers, in light of your mat size and number of coaches on the mat. For example, no more than 30 challengers for one coach on a mat.
STEP 7.
The next step is the commencement of the Challenge. It is a good idea on the first day to introduce yourself to the group and let them know a little bit about yourself and your history in BJJ (i.e. time training, coaching experience, competition achievements, etc).
A full program that you can follow or use as a guideline for your 6 week Challenge is at Attachment 1 below.
STEP 8.
During week four begin looking at converting the challengers to full members. Send out an email campaign to the challengers with some sort of incentive to sign up before the end of the Challenge (at Kawana we offered a 10% discount on the recurring fees of their membership). Also be sure to mention this offer at the end of the Challenge classes as to remind them further about the discounted membership if they sign up prior to the end of the Challenge.
Please note that payments are to not be taken out until after that Challenge has been completed.
STEP 9.
After the challenge has ended, prepare a final list of challengers that have been converted to members. This will help see what your conversion rate was for the Challenge overall.
For example at Kawana we had a total of 20 challengers with 13 of those being converted to members. That is a 65% conversion rate.
Step 10.
Finally, to help gain feedback prepare a survey monkey survey for the challengers (both challengers that were converted and those that were not) to fill out. This can then be used as feedback to further improve on any further challenges you run at your academy.
Below are the questions that we used for our survey.
- How have you enjoyed your time throughout the 6 week Challenge?
- Which time would suit you best if you had the option?
- Would you have liked the option of a No-Gi session in addition to the Gi classes?
- What do you think could be improved about the challenge?
- What did you like most about the challenge?
- What did you like least about the challenge?
- Any other comments/feedback?
Please send the results of this survey through to HQ.
ESTIMATED MARKETING COSTS
All marketing was done through a local facebook marketing campaign and it is recommended that you set aside $1500 for marketing over a 3 week period in the lead up to the start date of the challenge.
Kawana had a total of 20 people signed up to the challenge with each challenger paying $299 for the challenge.
20 x $299 = $5980
Please note that with the gi included as part of the 6 week challenge you will need to deduct the franchisee cost of those gi’s from the profits made from the challenge to cover the cost of the uniforms.
Example
20 x Gi = $1500
Total Profits from 6 Week Challenge
$5980 – $1500 – $1500
= $2980 total profit
